Veterans Day is a holiday observed annually in the United States in honor of all the men and women, living and dead, who served with the United States armed forces (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard). This Holiday is celebrated on November 11th. As President Eisenhower once said, Veterans Day is "a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good." Perhaps people in your family, neighborhood or even in your school. People who have sacrificed to make our country safe for all who live here.
Your next assignment has two parts. Part 1 (due November 5th) - you will go to the "Honor Our Veterans Wall Wisher" below and enter the name of a Veteran you know. Please let that person know you want to place his/her name on our Veterans Honor Wall. The directions on how to post your note is below. That person, man or woman, is either presently serving or did serve in the Armed Forces in the past. I have entered my father's name as an example. Please remember to enter your name on your sticky note along with the name and rank (if you know it) of the Veteran you are honoring. Include the relationship of the Veteran to you- for example is this person your Aunt or cousin or neighbor or grandfather, friend or teacher, etc. Make sure you check for grammar, spelling and correct punctuation before posting your note.
Part 2 (due November 12th) - you will go to the discussion feature on your group page- not this page- and write a short essay about what Veterans Day mean to you. Of course we know it means a day off from school so we can sleep a little later in the morning and perhaps go shopping or play soccer with our friends, but why do we have the day off and what does it mean to us. Take time to take to a Veteran that you know and listen to what this day means to him or her.
Directions to use Wall Wisher: Scroll down the page and click on the "Post Sticky" tab on the Wall Wisher below (at the bottom left of the page). This will bring you to the Wall Wisher web page that I created for this class. Once you get to that page you will double click on the page to add your own "sticky" to our "wall". You will need to enter your name by removing the word anonymous(highlight the word and click delete) and typing in your first name only (it will only allow you to type 10 letters of your name) and then respond to the assignment question using 160 characters or less. Make sure you remove the words "Write your post here" (you can highlight it and click delete) on your sticky note BEFORE you begin posting your response. Good Luck!
